Sandwich selectmen approve beach wedding request, accept donations and sign warrants; other business addressed
Summary
The board conditionally approved a wedding at the Sandwich beach during Fair weekend, accepted a pickleball equipment donation, approved a $3,500 reimbursement for the library trust, signed timber tax warrants and discussed beach staffing, signage, and the recent death of an employee.
At its July 13 regular meeting the Sandwich Selectmen approved several administrative actions, addressed community concerns and heard updates on staffing and town projects.
Temporary use and votes: The board voted unanimously to conditionally approve a temporary use application from Ron Palsgrove to hold a wedding ceremony at the Sandwich beach during Sandwich Fair weekend for fewer than 50 attendees; Mr. Palsgrove said no equipment beyond a few chairs would be on site and the beach would remain open to the public. Selectman Caroline Nesbitt moved to conditionally approve the application and Chair Joanne Haight seconded the motion.
The board accepted a donation of pickleball equipment from Tony Wagner (motion by Haight, seconded by Nesbitt), approved a Trustee of Trust Funds reimbursement request of $3,500 from the Library Building Expendable Trust (motion by Nesbitt, seconded by Haight), signed accounts-payable and planning manifests, and approved timber tax warrants for parcels 217-08 and 224-032 (motion by Nesbitt, seconded by Heard). All recorded motions passed unanimously.
Other business and staff updates: Selectmen acknowledged the sudden passing of employee Kevin Smith and expressed condolences. Courtney Delaney reported public feedback about recently installed 'no trailer parking' signage at the beach (which she had ordered following prior Board discussions) and the board discussed potential additional downtown signage to discourage U-turns. The board discussed the Recreation Director’s office hours and ongoing challenges with beach attendant staffing; Delaney said she had proposed staffing as a matter for the 2027 budget cycle and recommended public feedback on beach use. Delaney also said she had received comparative police staffing and budget data from the Police Chief. Sandwich Historical Society proposed opening a 50-year time capsule at its August 9 picnic; Delaney is working to facilitate a meeting with the state Department of Transportation about salt usage on a pending date.
No contested votes occurred and the board adjourned at 7:21 PM.
