San Juan proclaims ADA Awareness Day; local groups announce 'Battle of the Heroes' event

George, a representative of VAIL, thanked the commission for the proclamation and urged the city to continue expanding accessibility locally. George described VAIL’s relocation to Alamo to be closer to the Mid Valley campus and discussed transportation ideas to better serve residents with disabilities.
Commissioners also heard from Redemption Boxing and the San Juan Police Athletic League about a community event called the first annual "RGB Battle of the Heroes," scheduled for Aug. 29 at the new Parks & Recreation Center. Organizers said the USA Boxing‑sanctioned amateur event will feature up to 25 bouts (three one‑minute rounds) and will include first responders and public-safety personnel; organizers noted participants must hold amateur licenses and pass physicals and that sanctioning includes insurance and bonding. "It's a USA sanctioned event...USA Boxing will oversee the whole event," one organizer said.
During presentations, Mayor Garza and other commissioners commended local police after a swift response to locate and return an elderly man with Alzheimer’s to his family; Chief Cifuentes told the commission, "He's safe and sound. He's already back at home." Commissioners thanked officers for their quick response and for working with community members who provided tips to locate the individual.
The commission expressed support for the proclamation and the community event and invited continued coordination between organizers and city staff for permits, insurance and logistics.
