County staff said the hearing follows earlier public input and a county resolution creating the ambulance subordinate service district. Staff told the board a negotiated contract with the City of International Falls for ambulance services is in progress and that the hearing is intended to present the subsidy amount publicly before any contract is signed. “This is what it’s going to take to sustain this level of service and to receive public input before any type of contract is signed,” staff said.
Board members emphasized transparency and asked that the published notice include the proposed dollar amount once the steering committee finalizes it. Staff said they would confirm the figure with commissioners before publishing the hearing notice. The motion to set the hearing passed by voice vote, recorded as unanimous in the meeting record.
Next step: county staff will publish notice of the Aug. 5 public hearing with the subsidy amount after final committee agreement and will accept public comment at the scheduled hearing.
