On the second reading of Ordinance 2025-09, Council members discussed removing a physical-signage requirement for short-term rentals and whether existing operators should be grandfathered.
Mayor Rok said the council was "still waiting for the town attorney's feedback on the grandfather clause" and suggested removing the signage requirement. Councilman Merrill argued signage is redundant if online information is available and that signage forces people to "go on people's property normally to see it," raising safety concerns. Councilman Toolson said she would "probably not vote for this ordinance going through if we don't have a grandfather clause," citing potential impacts on long-time operators who rely on short-term rentals for retirement income.
Council members estimated roughly 60 to 70 percent of current short-term rentals display required signage. Mayor Rok committed to getting attorney feedback before the Jan. 2 posting deadline for the third reading and indicated the council would revisit the ordinance once legal guidance is available.
