Carlisle ESC advances local sustainability projects: DPW electric mower, solar planning and outreach efforts

The Environmental Sustainability Committee on June 4 advanced several local sustainability initiatives, including equipment purchases, outreach approvals and preliminary solar planning for town facilities.
Under the Natural Environment agenda, members were told that the Wildlife Connectivity Project maps (with ESC input) should be ready by Old Home Day. The committee approved proceeding with the DPW electric mower purchase. Jim Hall offered to have a member of his staff trained on invasive-species identification and removal if the ESC covers the training cost.
In the Built Environment discussion, members noted that delaying re-roofing of the existing fire station could facilitate installation of roughly a 30 kW solar array. The DPW architect contract selection remains with Ryan; Sarah Wasserman requested a meeting with Eric Balles and Keith Therrien to review the DPW solar system.
On outreach, the ESC voted unanimously to submit a recap of an invasive-species workshop to the town newsletter (motion moved by Eric Balles, seconded by Keith Therrien). Keith and Eric will develop a series of electrification articles for the town newsletter beginning with yard equipment. The committee approved Eric Balles’s article on the DPW electric mower by unanimous roll call. Members reported that an invasive-species removal and native-planting event around Town Hall had 10 volunteers and cost $325.35, under the $450 budget. The ESC authorized up to $250 for a DPW sandwich-board sign to educate residents about Japanese knotweed (motion moved by Eric Balles, seconded by Keith Therrien, passed unanimously). Eric Balles and Christina Christodoulopoulos will staff a table at Race Amity Day, and the ESC will present wildlife information at Race Amity Day and Old Home Day.
The committee recorded follow-up tasks including staff meetings on DPW solar plans and outreach content development for the newsletter; no formal contracts or large budget allocations were authorized at this meeting.
