Students and administrators report on Homecoming events, initiatives and spring NJSLA results

Student government and district administrators presented school activities and performance updates at the Oct. 14 meeting of the Salem County Special Services and Vocational Technical boards.
The SGA reported that 20 members volunteered at freshman orientation and outlined Homecoming Spirit Week activities under the theme “Once Upon a Time,” including a canned food drive, Powder Puff, Skills USA events, Trunk or Treat, hallway decorating and a pep rally. The SGA said it will work with Dr. Shoemaker on several initiatives to improve school climate, such as a Staff Member of the Month program, a Gratitude Board and a “Where Are They Headed” map display; students also plan to attend the State Winter Leadership conference in January.
Administrators reported that Dr. Wentzell attended Disability Awareness Day and is coordinating services with other districts; Jim Helder gave updates on Halloween Trunk or Treat plans, student workplace placements, enrollment increases, sports and Unified Sports participation in the Alloway parade; Alicia Smith noted a county education specialist visit and a Daretown Lunch & Learn scheduled for the next day. The board also received a presentation on NJSLA spring 2025 test scores.
The board approved the listed presentations and reports by general vote and recorded that these informational items were accepted as presented. No substantive policy changes or contested debate on these presentations were recorded in the minutes.
The board moved on to other agenda items after approving the presentations.
