Forest Heights sets Aug. 15 for community day; council corrects National Night Out date

The council approved a series of ceremonial proclamations and discussed logistics for the town’s community festival. Members adopted a Parks and Recreation Month proclamation and moved to correct and then adopt the National Night Out proclamation, changing the event date to Tuesday, Aug. 4. The council also adopted the Forest Heights proclamation and confirmed Forest Heights Day on Aug. 15; Mayor Lily said the proclamation will be read in full at the event.

Why it matters: Forest Heights Day is the town’s major annual festival and requires decisions about location, parking and safety planning. Council members debated whether to hold the event at a traditional park or at the Forsyth/Forest Heights Elementary field to allow a potential Guardian helicopter landing and to give children more room to play. Council members emphasized bringing the vendor layout closer together so the event resembles a street festival and discussed bus/shuttle options to improve access.

Council president Noble urged improvements that increase safety and visibility and noted the town might secure traffic-calming signage from partnership programs. Council member Kennedy and others urged practical changes—shorter vendor footprints, ticket logistics for food vendors and attention to hydration on a hot day. Chief (police) raised the operational requirement that the field chosen be large enough for a Guardian helicopter landing if that element is included.

Outcome: The council moved toward using the Forsyth/Forest Heights Elementary field with instructions to refine the layout and consider shuttle/bus stop logistics, parking and a possible rain date (Aug. 22). The town will issue a public graphic and signage to publicize the event.
