Bonner Springs — The City Council approved a final payment of $704,709.23 to Atmos Energy for relocation of natural gas facilities associated with the 100 & 38th Street improvements project.
Matt Beetz, public works director, said the original 2023 agreement anticipated the city paying 76% of relocation costs for Atmos’ private easement, but when the work was done in 2025 the price increased and Atmos also hired a third‑party inspector during concurrent utility work. "Basically, they were working at the same time as a contractor putting the water line in, and they wanted to have a third‑party inspector out there overseeing both because of this they were concerned with safety on the project," Beetz said.
Council members asked whether the city knew about the inspector ahead of time and whether future phases would encounter similar costs; staff indicated the contract allowed reimbursement of certain costs and said future segments might not see the same issue where the water line is already installed.
The council approved the final payment on a recorded vote.
