Trail Center inspection issues, staff hire and rescue squad equipment needs discussed

Council received several operational updates on June 9 related to the Haysi Rescue Squad and the Russell Fork Trail Center and approved related staffing and supply purchases.
Facilities Coordinator Amanda Perrigan told the council that the trail center failed an initial building inspection for three issues: conduit fastening and breaker placement (corrected by the contractor) and bathroom door locks mounted 12 inches too high; new doors had been ordered and the contractor would call the inspector when corrections were finished so that a certificate of occupancy could issue. Perrigan said she would contact the Virginia Department of Health to schedule a health inspection once the building corrections are completed.
Perrigan also reviewed purchasing and point-of-sale options. She described a GoDaddy point-of-sale offer with an annual service plan of $347 and equipment that normally costs $399 but that had been offered for $50 with the service plan. She reported she had already spent $752.20 of an approved $1,000 purchase allowance and asked the council to approve an additional Coca-Cola order for $958.62; Council Member Debbie Wood moved to approve the Coca-Cola purchase and Carter Branham seconded; the motion passed.
Perrigan reported two applicants for the part-time custodian position and recommended hiring Vicky O'Quinn at $14 per hour for eight hours per week; the council approved the hire unanimously. Perrigan and Mayor Yates also discussed rental and resale planning connected to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation grant outcomes (three new jobs, three new businesses, and 500 visitors were grant targets reported by the clerk earlier).
Separately, Haysi Rescue Squad representative Logan Deel reported 30 calls for the month and 255 calls year-to-date; he requested that the town consider housing a washer/dryer for ambulance linens and noted the squad’s equipment requests (another heart monitor and three electric stair chairs). Mayor Yates offered to help with a grant application on the squad's behalf.
