Rotary Club’s 'Recycle Beyond the Bag' program wins council recommendation to Waste Collection Board

The Buckhannon City Council recommended that the Waste Collection Board consider partnering with the Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur on a new soft-plastics recycling initiative called 'Recycle Beyond the Bag.'
Tina Cunningham, Assistant Governor for Area 7 at Rotary District 7545, outlined the program and said the Rotary seeks a partnership with the city’s Waste Collection Department to collect soft plastics that typically are not accepted in curbside recycling. Cunningham’s written materials and promotional release describe a partnership with Trex to turn collected plastics into durable composite benches for local parks and community spaces. The Rotary listed drop-off locations and said members will accept donations at regular meetings; pickup arrangements are available by contacting Cunningham.
Council members Thomas and Sanders moved to recommend the partnership to the City of Buckhannon Waste Collection Board; the motion carried. Council also recorded general support for the program in members’ remarks.
