The Centura Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously on Feb. 25 to adopt a resolution calling a bond election on May 12, 2026, to authorize up to $18,950,000 in general obligation bonds for facility improvements and associated equipment.
The motion to approve the resolution was made by board member Todd Nitsch and seconded by Teresa Grabowski; the vote was 5–0 with Brooke Schmitt recorded as absent. Board President Sandra Davis presided over the meeting in the district boardroom in Cairo, Neb.
Why it matters: If approved by voters, the bonds would fund additions and renovations at district buildings and a package of safety and security, mechanical, fire‑safety, heating, air conditioning, electrical and plumbing upgrades. The resolution specifically lists creating instructional space, ADA compliance updates, a secure entrance and commons addition, interior classroom, restroom and locker room renovations, parking and traffic flow improvements, and necessary furniture, technology and apparatus.
What the resolution does: The board’s resolution (adopted by majority vote) orders an election to be held in conjunction with the statewide primary on May 12, 2026, and sets the ballot language that voters will see: a single proposition asking whether the district may issue bonds in the amount not to exceed $18,950,000 and whether a special levy of taxes will be made annually to pay the bonds’ principal and interest. The resolution directs the district secretary or superintendent to publish notice and a sample ballot, arrange printing of ballots and certify the resolution to the Howard County Election Commissioner by March 1, 2026.
Administrative and geographic details: The district’s territory includes electors in Howard, Buffalo, Hall and Sherman counties; ballots and voting arrangements will be coordinated across those counties. Polling places for the primary election will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 12, 2026, and early voting ballots are available from the election commissioners in the listed counties.
Process and next steps: Ballot publications and required legal notices will be handled per state law. If voters approve the measure, the board may issue bonds in one or more series, with interest rates and maturities determined by the board; the resolution authorizes the board to set those details as needed. Certification to the Election Commissioner is required by March 1, 2026.
Votes at a glance: The meeting record shows the board passed four recorded motions by unanimous vote of members present (5–0) with one member absent: (1) to excuse Brooke Schmitt (motion: Teresa Grabowski; second: Mark Johnson); (2) to approve the agenda (motion: Mark Johnson; second: Todd Nitsch); (3) to approve the resolution calling the bond election (motion: Todd Nitsch; second: Teresa Grabowski); and (4) to adjourn (motion: Mark Johnson; second: Chelsea Schweitzer).
