Centura Board adopts 2024 Nebraska science standards and formalizes curriculum-adoption process

CAIRO, Neb. — The Centura Public Schools Board of Education on April 13 voted to adopt the 2024 Nebraska College and Career Ready Science Standards and approved updates to Policy 6004 that create a formal curriculum-adoption process and timeline.
Superintendent Dr. Kaela Heneger told the board the existing Policy 6004 “needs to be amended to add a curriculum adoption process and timeline.” The board approved the policy revision and, in a separate vote, approved the curriculum-adoption process as presented.
The adopted process ties the district’s timeline to the Nebraska Department of Education’s adoption of new standards: once the state finalizes standards, Centura will begin a public review period for instructional materials, pilot sample lessons drawn from proposed materials, and ultimately present a recommendation to the board for potential purchase.
Board members and administrators stressed that public review will be available before final purchase decisions. Elementary Principal Janet Brown told the board teachers have already taught lessons using sample science materials and that the public will have an opportunity to review the materials prior to a final May decision.
The motion to adopt the state science standards was made and seconded in open session and passed unanimously among members present. Mark Johnson moved to adopt the 2024 Nebraska College and Career Ready Science Standards; Chelsea Schweitzer seconded. Sandra Davis and Teresa Grabowski were recorded as absent; voting members voted 4–0 in favor.
Why it matters: adopting the state standards will guide what science content Centura teaches and starts a district-led selection process for aligned textbooks and instructional resources. If materials are purchased, the district will incur costs in future budgets for procurement and teacher training.
Next steps: the board plans a public review of proposed materials and will present a final recommendation at the May board meeting. The curriculum-adoption policy and timeline approved April 13 set those public-review and decision milestones.
