Board President Sandra Davis convened the Centura Public Schools Board of Education at 6:00 p.m. Monday in Cairo, Neb., where members approved several routine and program contracts and adopted the 2026–27 school calendars.
The board voted 4–0, with Todd Nitsch and Brooke Schmitt recorded as absent, to designate KSB School Law as the district's legal counsel. The vote followed a motion by Teresa Grabowski and a second by Mark Johnson.
In a separate decision, the board approved renewal of the ESU10 Special Education contract but explicitly excluded school psychologist services from that renewal. The board directed district staff to advertise for a district-paid school psychologist; if the district cannot fill the position, members said the ESU10 contract for those services can be renegotiated. The ESU10 renewal motion passed 4–0 after discussion about staffing and service delivery options.
The board also approved a service contract with GO Grand Island Physical Therapy as presented. That vote, like others at the meeting, passed unanimously among members present.
Trustees approved the consent agenda, which included the General Fund claims total of $660,730.33 (payables $103,698.08; payroll $557,032.25), Building Fund claims of $2,152.35 and Depreciation Fund claims of $5,484.84.
Board members adopted the 2026–2027 Centura District calendar and the 2026–2027 preschool calendar. Members also heard routine reports from administrators: Laethion Brown, dean of students/activities director, updated the board on athletics and upcoming events; Elementary Principal Janet Brown summarized recent school activities and an upcoming author visit; Secondary Principal Melissa Beberniss reported growth in college-level course participation and K–8 MAP results (68% reading met norms, 63% math met norms). Superintendent Dr. Kaela Heneger updated the board on staffing intent-to-return procedures and the district budgeting process.
The board reviewed committee business, including facilities and finance topics such as insurance quotes, classified salary schedule reorganization, and a forthcoming percolation study for the wastewater treatment plant scheduled Feb. 9–10. Dr. Heneger also provided brief legislative updates on bills of interest to schools, including LB1038, LB824 and LB1053.
The meeting adjourned at 6:58 p.m. following a motion by Mark Johnson and a second by Teresa Grabowski.
