Beaufort County school board swears in new members and elects leadership

At its Jan. 7 meeting, the Beaufort County Board of Education held a swearing-in ceremony for new and re-elected members and then elected its chair, vice chair and secretary; the board also set a timetable for committee assignments and announced a staff birth.
The Beaufort County Board of Education on Jan. 7, 2025, swore in three newly elected members and one re-elected member and then elected its leadership for the year.
Judge Grimsley administered the oath of office to the new board members after the presiding officer called the meeting to order at the District Educational Services Center and online. As part of the ceremony the judge led the oath and concluded, "So help me God," and congratulated the officials on their service.
After confirming a quorum, the board moved to the only formal item on the published agenda: the election of officers. By voice and show-of-hands votes, the board confirmed Mr. Geyer as chair, Carlton Dallas as vice chair and Ingrid Boatwright as secretary. A motion to approve the meeting agenda — moved and seconded as recorded — was adopted at the start of the session.
The board chair asked members to contact the chair, Boatwright, Dallas or Cushenberry with committee preferences so the board can name members and chairs for at least three standing committees (finance, academic and operations) before the next regular meeting. The chair also announced that former administrative assistant Molly Mercado recently had a baby boy, noting the child weighed about 6 pounds.
A member asked whether the agenda-setting meeting the next day would be in person or via Zoom; the chair said it would be available both ways and scheduled it for 5:00 p.m. The board adjourned by unanimous consent shortly after the leadership elections and announcements.
The meeting began at 6 p.m. and was held at the District Educational Services Center with online participation. No ordinances, contracts or budget items were considered at this session.
