Centura Public Schools board approves insurer switch, hires engineer for wastewater project and OKs surplus sale

Centura Public Schools’ Board of Education voted March 9 to change the district’s comprehensive insurance provider to ALICAP, select WDesign Associates to oversee a wastewater treatment plant replacement, approve a district surplus sale, and enter a softball co-op with neighboring Central Valley Public Schools.
Board President Sandra Davis noted an “approximately $46,000” annual premium difference between the options presented and said ALICAP also offered smaller deductibles. The motion to approve ALICAP for property, casualty, liability, workers’ compensation and automobile coverage passed unanimously among members present. Treasurer Todd Nitsch and Superintendent Dr. Kaela Heneger had reviewed the proposals with the Facilities, Finance and Transportation committee before the vote.
On infrastructure, the board reviewed engineering bids from Olsson, Brickyard Consulting, Inc., WDesign Associates and Frontwater Engineering, LLC and approved WDesign Associates to oversee the wastewater treatment plant replacement project. The district did not provide a construction timeline or contract value at the meeting.
The board also approved a surplus sale scheduled for March 16–29 to liquidate excess district property, including two 10-passenger vans no longer certified for student transportation, plus tools, furniture and equipment; photos of auction items were presented during the meeting.
Activity Director and Dean of Students Laethion Brown recommended re-entering a softball co-op with Central Valley beginning in fall 2026. The board approved the co-op; the team will continue as the “Diamonds,” the district will serve as the head school and costs will be split between the partners. Brown said a two-year contract was recommended but the board may opt for year-to-year terms.
Votes at a glance: the insurance switch to ALICAP, selection of WDesign Associates, approval of the surplus sale and the softball co-op each passed by unanimous votes of members present (Sandra Davis, Teresa Grabowski, Todd Nitsch, Brooke Schmitt; Mark Johnson and Chelsea Schweitzer were absent).
What happens next: district staff will finalize the insurance contract with ALICAP, execute the engineering agreement with WDesign Associates, list surplus items for auction on the announced dates, and work with Central Valley officials to finalize co-op agreements and logistics for fall 2026.
