Silver Creek Township board approves $500,000 in proposed 2025 road projects

Chairman Mike Helman called the Silver Creek Township Board of Supervisors to order at 7:03 p.m. Nov. 7 and the board quickly moved through routine business before approving funding for proposed 2025 road projects.
Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to approve engineering funding for the 2025 road program — $360,000 for asphalt work and $140,000 for chip seal — and Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen seconded. The board approved the motion 5-0. The board directed maintenance staff to follow up with the township engineer to begin next steps on the project schedule.
The board also noted that the township received a county grant of $37,259.18 for the Gowan Ave project and that the county approved an extension for remaining grant funds allocated to the 134th Street culvert replacement. Maintenance reported the timing for the culvert replacement remains unknown and that staff will contact the contractor for an expected completion date.
On maintenance matters, members discussed equipment sharing between townships and agreed that sharing is allowed provided a mutual-aid agreement is signed. A new township truck is expected in December or January; Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to approve up to $500 for tires for the current truck but the motion died for lack of a second. Supervisor Andy Christensen said he may be able to donate a set of wheels and tires to keep the current truck serviceable until the new vehicle arrives.
Clerk-Treasurer Alana Paumen reported recycling activity and billing items: West Central collected 18.95 tons of recyclable materials from the township in October, and Paumen said the township will pay a MATIT workers' compensation premium of $7,580.00 at the end of the month. She also relayed resident complaints that recycling carts have not been emptied on multiple occasions.
During open forum, resident Brian Jones asked that action be taken regarding a neighboring property; the item was added to new business. Resident Bob Esse commented that “it was too easy to vote,” expressing concern about the voting process during public comment.
Under new business, the board directed staff to send letters and photos along with a copy of the township ordinance to property owners after complaints about accumulated cars at a property on 121st Street and tires and junk at a property on 114th Street. The transcript and board discussion referred to a township dog ordinance in response to a downtown dog-running-at-large complaint; the ordinance name or number was not specified in the meeting record.
The board recessed for a Board of Canvass meeting and later adjourned on a motion by Vice Chairman Geyen, seconded by Supervisor Nelson.
