Township approves up to $15,000 for tree trimming; Baker Ave culvert proposal tied 2-2

Chairman Mike Helman called the Silver Creek Township Board of Supervisors meeting to order Oct. 1, 2024, and the board moved quickly into maintenance business, approving a tree-trimming contract and debating a culvert alteration.

The most consequential action came on tree trimming: Carr's Tree Service presented a $12,000 estimate and Chairman Mike Helman moved to approve up to $15,000 for the work. Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen seconded the motion and the board carried the authorization on a 4-0 vote.

The meeting then turned to a proposal to lower a culvert on Baker Avenue. Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen raised concerns about potential liability from altering water flow; Supervisor Ryan Nelson offered a motion to complete the culvert-lowering work as needed and to consult the township attorney about liability, seconded by Helman. That motion failed on a 2-2 vote, leaving the culvert alteration unresolved.

Other maintenance items were discussed. The board tabled replacement of tires on the township Chevrolet 1500 while it considers replacing the vehicle, and members confirmed that a hydraulic study is included in the 2025 budget; the clerk noted the study should remain valid for five years once completed and that the township will gather cost estimates.

Board members said they will seek attorney guidance on liability questions before pursuing changes that could alter drainage.

Next steps: the township will collect estimates for the hydraulic study and consult the attorney about the Baker Avenue proposal. No further action on the culvert was recorded at the meeting.
