Silver Creek board to fund initial engineering study to control Locke Lake outflow

Silver Creek Township supervisors agreed Aug. 6 to hire an engineering consultant to study the outflow from Locke Lake and explore qualifying the work as a Town Bridge project that could be funded through county accounts.
The board heard from County Commissioner Vetsch and County Engineer Chad Hausmann, who told supervisors that the township would be responsible for the first $10,000 of engineering costs. If the hydraulic analysis indicates the work would trigger a Town Bridge project, the township’s initial engineering cost could be counted toward that $10,000; if not, the engineering expense would remain the township’s responsibility. County funds, they said, are not likely to be available for at least one to two years, and state approval could extend the funding timeline to three to five years.
Vice Chairman Mike Helman said the board’s first step is to hire a consultant to complete a hydraulic analysis and determine whether the Town Bridge program would apply. Resident Johan Massmann urged the township to be aggressive in addressing the issue to improve water control.
The board did not adopt a schedule for hiring the consultant during the meeting; county staff said they would check how long the engineering study would remain valid for funding purposes. The township will track next steps and funding availability, and any decision to use the Town Bridge account will require further county and likely state approvals.
