Madison Public Schools board approves 2025–26 budget, property tax request and HVAC bid

The Madison Public Schools Board of Education unanimously approved multiple fiscal and facilities measures during its Sept. 8 regular meeting in the Middle School/High School Conference Room.
The board adopted a resolution to increase the district’s base growth percentage used to determine its property tax request authority by up to 6 percent. The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Jim Knapp and seconded by Steve Ruh and passed on a 6–0 vote.
The board approved the 2025–26 General Fund budget for Madison Public Schools (District #59-0001), with General Fund expenditures of $12,802,668 as advertised and reviewed. The motion to approve the general fund budget was made by Steve Ruh and seconded by Harlow Hanson and carried 6–0.
Members also approved the 2025–26 budgets for the Depreciation Fund, Special Building Fund, Bond Fund, School Lunch Fund, QCPU Fund, School Activities Fund and Student Fee Fund as advertised and reviewed; that motion was made by Oscar Calderon, seconded by Jim Knapp, and passed 6–0.
The board approved the district’s 2025–26 property tax request of $8,201,395, with an estimated property tax levy of $0.714589. Kate Ebeling moved the motion to approve the tax request; Harlow Hanson seconded it, and the vote was 6–0.
On a facilities item, the board approved a bid from Volkman to replace two 10-ton rooftop units (RTUs) on the middle school. Jim Knapp moved the motion; Matthew Reeves seconded it. The motion passed unanimously.
Earlier in the meeting the consent agenda (items 2.1–2.3) was approved on a motion by Steve Ruh with a second from Oscar Calderon. The meeting packet also listed the board’s extra-batch payables for August and September, including a $157,881.62 payment to Educational Service Unit #8 and a $159,351.00 payment to EMC Insurance Companies, among other vendor payments and subscriptions.
The agenda recorded committee and administrative notes: the Americanism Committee will meet before the October meeting at 6:30 p.m., and the MEA requested a September meeting with the Negotiations committee. The board noted topics for next month’s meeting and adjourned at 8:46 p.m.
