Local pastors announce large Aug. 6 back-to-school rally in Tuscaloosa

Pastors David Gay and Steve Green told the Tuscaloosa City Council that they plan to stage a large back-to-school rally on Aug. 6 at the McDonough Hughes Center, promising giveaways intended for students and families across the city.
Pastor David Gay, introduced at the meeting by Miss Howard, said the event will include distribution of roughly 1,500 backpacks, food, televisions, tablets and free haircuts and that organizers expect the rally to be open to everyone. "We're gonna be giving away about 1,500 backpacks," he said. He added that organizers want funds raised for the event to stay in Tuscaloosa.
Pastor Steve Green, who described decades of running similar "Respect" events in Birmingham, framed the effort as a community-focused outreach. "People don't care how much you know. They wanna know how much you care," he said, recounting large attendance at past events in Birmingham and urging residents to participate.
Organizers told the council they plan to hold the Aug. 6 program in the Ravenston District at McDonough Hughes Center and said future events may expand to larger venues. No council action was required; the announcement was presented as a council-held public announcement and the pastors offered to meet with city staff as needed for logistics and permits.
