During new business commissioners opened nominations. Several members discussed leadership rotation; one commissioner with 14 years' service advocated rotating officers and leadership training to bring new perspectives. After nominations and a motion to elect Commissioner Smith as chair and Commissioner Perez as vice chair, the commission held a roll call vote; Commissioners Davis, Smith, Guerrero, Navarro, Evans and Chair Perez voted in favor and Vice Chair Rock was absent.
Commissioner Guerrero, speaking before the vote, noted the value of rotating officers: “I've been chair and vice chair for several times ... I believe the value in leadership training, rotating people and so forth.” The commission did not set a different effective date during the meeting and discussed timing of when new officers would assume duties; staff indicated the commission likely will hold the role selection annually and that changes could take place in upcoming months.
