Budget committee recommends $20,050 Friends donation for Nathaniel Witherell recreation programs

The PET budget committee voted to recommend that $20,050 from the Friends of Nathaniel Witherell be used to support the Nathaniel Witherell therapeutic recreation department.
"The Friends of Nathaniel Witherell have issued the first of two equal fiscal 26 donations ... totaling $20,050 to fund recreation and miscellaneous expenses," Joan said, listing proposed allocations of $14,475 for miscellaneous personal services, $3,800 for food and $1,775 for office services. Joan said the donation arrived in a check today and that, per the fiscal 27 budget resolution, the Board of Estimate and Taxation must approve the funds before the controller can appropriate them.
Mister Fisher moved the recommendation and Mister Fenton seconded. Committee members approved the item by voice vote; the chair characterized the matter as a routine recommendation.
The committee discussed that some of the $3,800 intended for "food" will support picnics and special events rather than normal operating meals, and Joan pointed to invoice detail in the meeting packet. The committee noted the Friends plan two payments (July and January) though Joan said an annual single payment would be cleaner; the board approved the first reimbursement procedure.
The committee said the recommendation will allow the controller to appropriate the funds once the BET's approval is recorded. Nathaniel Witherell is expected to appear before the full BET at the regular meeting on Monday for additional discussion of operational challenges and census issues mentioned by the chair.
