Wallace Center renovation nears bid stage with expanded program space and sustainability options

Architects and designers presented the Board of Selectmen on July 9 with final design iterations for the Wallace Center interior renovation, describing expanded programming capacity, accessibility upgrades and integrated energy improvements.
Tom Marcheri of QA&M and designer Erica Roberts described plans to convert underused areas into multifunctional arts and activity space, add a members’ lounge and a small conference room, relocate administrative offices and expand fitness and cafeteria-adjacent spaces. "We're essentially doubling the center's capacity for programming, at any one time," Marcheri said.
Project documents presented to the board show improved natural light, accessible entrances and an HVAC system sized for future integration with a geothermal field, if funds become available. Erica Roberts reviewed interior renders and said the design includes acoustical improvements, new millwork, updated technology for hybrid classes and a patio access door for the art room.
Friends of the Wallace Center said it will begin a capital campaign to address a possible funding shortfall; the project team emphasized that technical documents are complete and the town-owned building will go out to bid when financing is secured. The board expressed broad support and encouraged the team to proceed to bid and to return with final cost and funding plans.
No formal vote to award construction contracts was taken at the meeting; the item is moving from design into procurement planning and community fundraising.
