Lakewood board asks voters to cut board from nine to seven in November ballot question

The Lakewood Board of Education voted June 24 to ask voters whether to reduce the board’s membership from nine to seven by filling only one of three seats that expire Dec. 31, 2026. If approved by the public, the change would become effective Jan. 1, 2027 and would not remove any incumbent before a term expires.
Board members adopted a resolution that includes an interpretive statement explaining the mechanics of the change: three terms expire at the end of 2026, and the ballot question would direct that only one of those seats be filled in the November election, eliminating the other two. The resolution directs the Board Secretary to submit required documents to the Ocean County Clerk and Board of Elections.
Superintendent and business-office materials accompanying the resolution said the proposal is intended to “improve operational efficiency and reduce costs associated with Board elections and governance activities,” language included in the motion presented to the body. The board’s motion passed by roll-call vote during the publicly noticed meeting.
Next steps: the Board Secretary will send the certified resolution to county election officials and the county superintendent within statutory timeframes; the ballot question will appear with the exact language described in the interpretive statement if the county accepts the submission.
