Mayor Glenn Odom updated the council on the Children's Playground project, saying the 10,000-square-foot building will be delivered "the week after next" in 13 truckloads. He said the town is nearly halfway to its fundraising commitment for the playground and hopes to begin construction in October or November 2025; the project must be completed by Oct. 31, 2026, under the timeline discussed in the meeting.
Odom said he is considering sequencing construction so the building is erected before playground installation and that he plans to work with Northeastern Technical College and Dr. Wagner to design interior rooms to meet state requirements for a daycare facility. "They're going to provide somebody at no cost to help lay out a room the way the State wants it done to have daycare," Odom said, which the mayor said could allow the town to operate a daycare that would generate income to help pay for the building.
The council did not provide detailed budget line items at the meeting; Odom characterized the fundraising status as "almost halfway on commitment of money". The record indicates ongoing coordination with partners and further work on timelines and contractor schedules before construction begins.
