McBee council: multi-purpose building arriving soon; $10,000 donated to playground project

Mayor Glenn Odom told the Town Council on July 1 that the new multi-purpose building "should be here next week," with the ground cleared and preparations under way to pour the foundation.
At the same meeting, Willie Mae Roary, an Alligator Water & Sewer board member, and Wade Huggins, president of Alligator Rural Water & Sewer, presented a $10,000 check to Cherry McCoy, a member of the McBee Children's Playground Committee, as a donation toward the playground project.
Odom said the town intends to have the same contractor build both the community building and the playground; the town has asked that contractor to present detailed playground plans to the committee. He described the playground as "very expensive," and said it will be a fenced area with outside restrooms.
Odom said he met with NETC's Dr. Wagner and Ann Huyler of the South Carolina Forestry Commission about landscaping. According to Odom, the SC Forestry Commission will supply shrubs and trees and has asked that the town plant 25 native varieties. The council is also coordinating with the South Carolina Department of Transportation on turning lanes at the site, which Odom said is a safety concern.
Odom said the town purchased land by the recreation fields to support these efforts and noted NETC has expressed interest in operating a daycare program that could use space in the facility and provide students to help staff it. The town plans to post project updates and the financial report on the town hall door and in The Link.
