Pflugerville ISD outlines visioning process; ThoughtExchange shows teacher retention, communication and safety as top community concerns

Tamara Smith, who led the presentation, said the district partnered with Intu Learning to run a roughly five-month visioning process. The plan calls for a visioning task force of about 50—60 community members (including staff, parents, students, community partners and trustees) that will meet twice monthly from September through December, with board-level recommendations expected in January or February.
On participation, Tamara told trustees the ThoughtExchange had attracted nearly 4,000 people and recorded about 2,500 distinct thoughts and roughly 70,000 ratings of those ideas. She said top themes emerging so far are teacher support and retention, communication and transparency (multiple levels between campus, parents and district staff), student safety and behavior (with Seale Middle School specifically noted), equity and inclusion, and administrative efficiency.
Tamara described how the platform surfaces where respondents agree or split and said the system can also produce suggested next steps; the AI-generated examples included increasing compensation and workload reductions for staff, improving communication platforms, and targeted professional development and supports.
Several trustees, including Trustee Mott and Trustee Mayer, noted that student outcomes and learning were mentioned less frequently than expected in the ThoughtExchange results. Trustee Mayer suggested a post-conference exercise to translate training into actions and urged the district to collect more student-specific input by going into middle and high schools. Dr. Shepherd and staff acknowledged the gap and discussed extending the exchange window and conducting targeted student outreach before finalizing recommendations.
Tamara said staff would continue to refine the ThoughtExchange results, bring back deeper analysis to the board, and incorporate trustee suggestions about student outreach and task-force membership.
