The Pickens County Planning Commission approved a rezoning request (RZ191180) from agricultural to rural residential for a 10-acre parcel at 1057 (Waleskill) Highway 108 so the Jarrett family can establish a 1.5-acre home site for a family member.
Planning staff described the site and recommended approval, saying the request aligns with the area’s low-density rural residential character and would allow a single-family residence that meets minimum lot size requirements. "Staff believes that this request is not speculative, but rather supports a genuine need for family housing while preserving most of a larger tract for ongoing rural uses," Charles said.
Applicant Ricky Jared described how COVID-related changes increased household housing needs for his family and said his daughter had saved for a down payment and hoped to place a high-quality manufactured home or similar dwelling on the property to remain close to family. "We just need y'all's approval," Jared said.
The commission moved to accept the staff recommendation and the motion carried. The approval permits a family residence to be established subject to standard county permitting, surveying and lot-recording processes.
Next steps: the Jarretts will proceed with surveying and permitting required to create and build on the 1.5-acre home site. The commission noted plans for future staff training on planning and zoning matters.
