At its Oct. 3 workshop, the Pflugerville ISD board received an overview of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the trustee role in supporting implementation, oversight and curriculum alignment.
The presenter explained that TEKS serve as a statewide roadmap for what students should learn and that adoption and revision is a multi-year process. "When TEKS are developed and adopted, that process takes about 2 to 3 years total," the presenter told trustees, and she outlined board responsibilities including policy oversight, resource allocation and accountability for student outcomes.
To illustrate classroom access, the presenter played a short podcast she said was generated by an artificial-intelligence tool after she uploaded her presentation. "I took my presentation... I uploaded it into an AI... and it generated that podcast 100%," she said, adding the tool could help a dyslexic student access materials by listening rather than reading. Trustees discussed the role the board plays in supporting TEKS implementation, including advocacy to the Texas State Board of Education or TEA when standards create concerns.
The presenter also suggested the board ask whether approved purchases (textbooks, technology) align with TEKS and said trustees should expect updates on screener and assessment data related to TEKS-aligned outcomes.
The presentation closed with a practical note on professional development and community engagement as mechanisms the board can use to support implementation.
