PFISD students ask board to provide menstrual products in school restrooms

Three Wise High School students urged the Pflugerville ISD board to make menstrual products available in middle and high school restrooms, citing research on period poverty, missed class time and 622 signatures collected in support of a districtwide policy.
Three students told the Pflugerville Independent School District board on Oct. 3 that the district should provide free menstrual products in female restrooms across middle and high schools.
"I am requesting that menstrual products be available in feminine and female restrooms across all middle and high schools," said Farah Sabah, an 11th grader and student-body executive vice president at Wise High School. Sabah cited a 2023 study and told trustees that "23 percent of U.S. students struggle to afford period products" and that she had gathered 622 signatures supporting the initiative.
Other student speakers and a parent backed the request. "No student should have to choose between their education and their basic hygiene needs," said Aubrey Santos, Wise High School student council president. Parent and former ISD teacher Laura Silley said period products should be as accessible "the same as toilet paper, soap, and hand towels." Silley also raised related concerns about restroom safety and recommended vape detectors and informational posters.
The students framed the request as a health and equity issue that can reduce missed class time and the stigma students face when they must walk to a nurse's office to get supplies. Trustees thanked the speakers during public comment; the transcript records no formal board motion or vote on adopting a districtwide menstrual-product policy during the meeting.
The public-comment portion of the workshop included the three student remarks and related parent comments; board members did not announce a follow-up action on the request during the session.
