County backs continued evaluation of Cramer Creek land exchange to pursue DNRC conservation

Missoula County commissioners agreed on July 14 to send a letter to the State Land Board supporting further evaluation of a proposed land exchange involving parcels in Cramer Creek.
Chet Krauser, chief of Lands and Communities for Missoula County, described the proposal as a land exchange that has undergone scoping and would be presented to the State Land Board for preliminary consideration. Krauser said the exchange would involve roughly 8,139 acres in the Cramer Creek area going to DNRC in exchange for approximately 1,184 acres to the MPG Ranch; if the land board directs DNRC to proceed, DNRC would complete due diligence and a supplemental public-comment process before final approval.
Mike Chanel of The Nature Conservancy said TNC purchased the Cramer Creek lands in 2007 as part of the Montana Legacy Project and has been seeking a permanent conservation outcome for those parcels for more than 18 years. "We think it's a... good outcome," he said, and thanked commissioners for their consideration.
Commissioners expressed support for sending a letter that endorses continued evaluation and due-diligence by state agencies; the county will provide the letter for the land board’s upcoming meeting.
