West Bend-Mallard CSD board approves bank depositories, clears consent agenda and field trip

The West Bend-Mallard Community School District Board of Directors approved a set of routine and fiscal measures during its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, in West Bend.
The board designated West Iowa Bank in West Bend as an official depository for $7,000,000 and Farmers State Bank in West Bend for $5,000,000 for the 2024–25 school year after a motion by Chris Montag and a second from Nicole Myer. The board named the West Bend Journal its official publication for the same period on a motion by Dave Bruellman, seconded by Chris Montag.
Principal Tiffany Morey updated the board on school operations, saying the district's first full professional development day had taken place, elementary staff continue LETRS training with Rachel Brown from the AEA, and Fastbridge testing will begin soon to benchmark students’ starting levels. Morey said staff appreciated the Wednesday early-release time used for collaboration and intervention planning and reported positive feedback about new staff as the district prepares for homecoming.
Superintendent Paul Peppmeier told the board that administrators are planning a joint meeting with Gilmore City-Bradgate on Oct. 8 that will host three boards in West Bend. Peppmeier proposed moving the November regular meeting from Nov. 19 to Nov. 12 and said he will attend the ISFLC & SAI conference in Des Moines. He also told the board the district received a letter from the IHSAA noting there were no ejections of coaches or athletes during the 2023–24 school year.
On routine governance matters, the board approved the consent agenda — which included minutes, warrants, open enrollments, fundraisers (4th of July Breakfast and 5K Run for Track/XC; Preferred Seating at Play for Drama; "You’ve Been Tanked" and air freshener sales for Prom) — and approved second readings for board policies 401.11, 401.12, 401.12R1 and 401.14. A first reading was held for additional policies (501.03, 501.09, 501.14, 501.15) and several rescindings were recorded for earlier policy versions.
The board approved several personnel and operational items by motion: disposal of two school buses; acceptance of the resignation of Kate Schlosser as assistant wrestling coach; and hiring Al Montag and Lester Buenger as bus drivers. The board also approved an out-of-state music trip for the district’s music program to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre on March 15, 2025. There was no action taken on facility improvements during the meeting.
Board President John Zaugg said he had received positive feedback from staff and community members about the district's cell phone policy, noting appreciation for consistency by grade level. The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. and adjourned at 6:16 p.m.
