West Bend-Mallard board appoints secretary, approves bids, policies, personnel and purchases

At the West Bend-Mallard Community School District Board meeting on Aug. 20, members approved a slate of routine administrative items and personnel actions.
Nicole Myer moved to appoint Crystal Eggers as Board Secretary/Treasurer; the motion, seconded by Lisa Traub, carried and Board President John Zaugg administered the oath. Dave Bruellman moved to appoint Steve Avery as the district’s school attorney for 2024–25; that motion was seconded by Chris Montag and approved.
The board approved procurement decisions for the school year, accepting the milk bid from Anderson Erickson and the bread bid from Okoboji Bake Shop after a motion from Dawn Schmidt (seconded by Lisa Traub). The board also adopted its FY25 legislative priorities — including teacher recruitment; dropout/at-risk and mental health; private school choice; and school safety — on a motion from Lisa Traub.
Board members set substitute pay at $150 for teachers and $95 for paraeducators, approved student and activities handbook changes, and authorized purchase of a 7x14 H&H enclosed trailer from Tom Eischen Sales for $7,700.
Personnel actions included acceptance of resignations from Ashley Edge (paraeducator) and Tyson Wirtz (morning weightlifting). The board approved multiple hires: paraprofessionals Heather Breshears, Sadie Moser and LeAnn Grimm; long-term substitutes Ashley Warren (high-school special education), Breann Schneider (art) and Audrey Zaugg (7th–8th reading) pending certification; and athletic/volunteer appointments Jackie Wirtz (assistant middle-school volleyball), Stephan Froehlich (middle-school assistant football), Cory Thilges (volunteer high-school football) and Corbin Fehr (volunteer filming football).
All motions noted in the minutes carried as presented at the meeting. The board adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
