Mebane — Mayor Ed Hooks warned residents that Norfolk Southern's pre-construction work for the Carolinian/Piedmont passenger rail improvement project may cause temporary roadway closures at several railroad crossings across the city.
“Drivers in Mebane should be aware of some temporary traffic impacts over the next several weeks as Norfolk Southern continues pre-construction work for the Carolinian/Piedmont passenger rail improvement project,” Hooks said.
He said closures could take place Monday through Thursday and may last for several hours at a time while crews stage and place rail replacement materials. Norfolk Southern is coordinating the work with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and will place detour signage to direct traffic around affected areas, Hooks said. The city has not been provided with specific closure dates or times.
Crossings that may be affected, as named on the broadcast, include Gibson Road, Moore Road, 3rd Street, 4th Street, 5th Street, Mattress Factory Road, Buckhorn Road and Redmond Road. Residents were advised to plan ahead and allow extra travel time when driving near rail crossings during weekday construction.
Next steps: Residents should monitor city and Norfolk Southern communications for posted schedules and detour instructions; the city will post updates when it receives specific closure dates.
