Aurora to accept $50,000 Bloomberg youth climate grant to fund youth-led microgrants

The finance committee on July 16 approved acceptance of a $50,000 Youth Climate Action Fund grant administered by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors on behalf of Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Simon Rodriguez said Aurora is one of about 300 international cities selected for the program; the grant will fund microgrants of roughly $1,000 to $5,000 for youth-led climate projects (eligible participants are ages 15–24). Staff described a blind first-round review by seven Aurora Youth Council members, a final review by five members of the Aurora Sustainability Board, and a project completion deadline in April 2027 with a final report due to Bloomberg by May 14, 2027.
Rodriguez said the program will include co‑design sessions for high-school students, college students and nonprofit partners, and staff expect Bloombergl to announce all participating cities’ project results in April. Aldermen praised the application design and approved acceptance of the grant 3-0. Staff will launch application materials during the late August application period and work with youth groups on implementation and reporting.
