The Atascadero City Council confirmed an internal appointment to replace retiring Fire Chief Bryson and welcomed the incoming chief at a brief ceremony on Thursday.
City Manager Lewis described the appointed candidate as a long‑serving internal leader who has championed weed abatement and obtained grant funding for hazard‑reduction efforts. "He has had an amazing career ... he has championed our weed abatement, created the fire safe communities program, obtained millions of dollars for weed abatement grants," Lewis said.
The incoming chief (introduced on the record as Chief Ensign by staff) thanked the mayor, council and city manager and said he was "honored to be able to continue with his legacy and ... ready to give it all in." Council members offered brief congratulations before the council posed for a photo with the chief and his family.
The confirmation was part of the consent calendar approved unanimously by the council.
