Saltville council approves Elk Knob to remove trestle; VDOT sets Nov. 15 target

The Saltville Town Council voted Oct. 28 to accept a bid from contractor Elk Knob to remove a deteriorating trestle, moving forward with a teardown the town said VDOT has targeted for Nov. 15, 2025.
Public Works Director Brandon Frye told council he had reached out to several contractors and received interest from one firm that proposed a four-person crew and use of heavy equipment. Frye relayed the firm's estimate of about $3,500 per day for crew and equipment, not including roughly $1,500 per day for crane time. The council recorded that a local farmer agreed to take salvageable timber and that the contractor would dispose of treated timber.
Town Manager Cecile Rosenbaum said she had drawn up an emergency procurement letter and contacted companies to secure the work. Rosenbaum said she and the engineer have coordinated with DEQ staff; a DEQ representative indicated no special disposal permits were required based on the information provided to date.
Councilman David Buchanan moved to accept the Elk Knob bid; Councilman Cary Sauls seconded the motion and the council approved it by roll call vote with all present voting aye.
The town said crews hope to remove enough of the trestle structure to avoid travel impacts during the coming winter. Further scheduling, contract terms and payment details were not specified in the meeting record.
