The South Weber City Council unanimously approved Resolution 26‑30 on July 14, amending its nepotism policy to allow limited familial hires in certain non‑supervisory positions. Dave, speaking for city staff, said internal staffing challenges prompted the change: "There have been a couple of scenarios where department heads have approached me on hiring situations that have run directly into the nepotism policy," he said, explaining the amendment targets narrow categories where candidate pools are small.
Under the amendment, relatives may be hired for part‑time fire positions, recreation jobs and crossing‑guard roles provided they are not in a direct supervisory relationship. Council members pressed staff on disclosure and timing; a staff speaker pointed to an application change and a specific disclosure clause, with the transcript noting paragraph 10 requires applicants and employees to disclose relative relationships at hiring or upon development of such a relationship. One staff speaker summarized: "All applicants and employees shall disclose any relative relationship with a city officer or employee as part of the hiring process or upon the development of such relationship. Failure to disclose may be grounds for discipline."
Council members also discussed operational safeguards: the policy retains prohibitions on supervisory relationships and includes monitoring and possible remedies if violations occur. The legal/administrative sections referenced in the policy (audit, notice of default, cure periods) remain as enforcement mechanisms. A motion to approve the resolution passed on a roll call vote announced as unanimous.
The council directed staff to ensure the revised disclosure question appears in hiring materials and to return if further clarifications or operational impacts are identified.
