Resident urges transparency after Arlington police shooting; board outlines review process

Pamela Pinock presented a petition the board to demand transparency and accountability after the May 8 officer‑involved shooting that resulted in the death of Sean Vaughn. Pinock said the community has received "little to no meaningful information" and asked the board to convene a public forum, show body‑worn camera footage and describe de‑escalation and use‑of‑force policies that guided the response.

The board read a prepared statement acknowledging Mr. Vaughn’s death and said a regional Critical Incident Response Team (CERT) is conducting the criminal investigation. The chair explained that the Commonwealth’s Attorney leads the criminal review and that the county will not preempt that process. "Following the conclusion of the criminal investigation, the board expects that a thorough administrative review will be conducted in coordination with the independent policing auditor," the chair said. Several board members said they supported community engagement and pledged to work with the Commonwealth’s Attorney, the independent policing auditor and the community oversight board while emphasizing legal limits on interim disclosures during active criminal investigations.

Several board members expressed sympathy and committed to follow-up; the chair said staff would prepare a short written statement and explore the schedule for community meetings and other appropriate transparency measures while protecting the integrity of the criminal investigation.

What’s next: the board said staff will follow up and coordinate with the Commonwealth’s Attorney, the regional investigation team and the independent policing auditor on what and when information can be shared publicly.
