Decatur to proceed with INDOT land sale only if trail-use rights preserved

The City of Decatur will only proceed with an INDOT purchase of parcels near the Wendell Macklin Memorial Bridge if the contract explicitly preserves continued trail use, the City Attorney said at the Oct. 7 council meeting.
City Attorney Anne Razo explained INDOT offered $1,000 for a City-owned parcel and $9,740 for two parcels owned by the Parks and Recreation Department. The Council agreed to pursue the transaction on the condition that the contract include language allowing continued use of the area for the trail system; Councilor Matt Dyer moved approval to proceed if that clause was included and Councilor Abby Wilder seconded. The motion passed.
Razo said the Parks and Recreation Board will separately consider the $9,740 offer for its parcels. The meeting record does not disclose whether INDOT or the Parks board agreed to specific trail-language draft wording; that will appear when the contract is returned to the Council or Parks Board for final approval.
