Sullivan — At its most recent meeting, the Sullivan City Council approved a temporary road closure to allow a museum‑organized bed race during the Korn Festival and accepted the annual festival contract; councilors also reviewed a disaster‑recovery consulting selection.
Road closure: The council considered a letter from Katicia Benson, curator of the Sullivan County History Museum, requesting temporary closure of a section of North Main Street on Sept. 16 from 6 p.m. until no later than 8 p.m. Benson’s letter asked for a racecourse at least 50 yards long with an additional 10 yards for slowing, and a participant limit of 15 beds. After discussion of parking, crowding and proximity to festival music, Council member Brown moved to approve the closure and Council member Bonham seconded. The council voted aye; staff will work with the museum to define the exact closure area for final confirmation next month.
Festival contract: Attorney review was completed for the Korn Festival contract included in the meeting packet. The council moved to accept the contract as presented; Councilwoman Pat Mayfield seconded and members voted aye to approve the contract that is typically brought to council annually.
Aegis and OCCRA funding: Chair informed the council that OCCRA‑facilitated disaster funds of approximately $6.8 million are available for tornado recovery and that Aegis was the sole respondent to the request for proposals. The Board of Public Works approved the selection contingent on OCCRA approval; the chair said the city will sign the Aegis contract once OCCRA finalizes approval and that the contract will be funded from the grant.
Next steps: Staff will follow up with the museum to map the exact closure route and will return with precise closures for council approval. The Aegis contract remains contingent on OCCRA action; the chair said the contract will be signed after OCCRA approval.
