The Newport News City Council voted unanimously at its July 14 work session to enter a closed meeting under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.
A council member moved that the council convene a closed meeting citing Code of Virginia §2.2-3711(a), listing interview/appointments to council committees, discussion of prospective business or expansions in the Central and Southern districts, and consultation with legal counsel regarding collective bargaining. The motion was seconded; the council called the roll and the motion carried on a 7–0 vote.
After the closed meeting, the council reconvened in open session and approved a certification that only the public business matters identified in the motion were discussed in the closed meeting, again passing the certification by roll call.
Council then considered committee assignments. A motion was made and seconded to add Councilman Long to the Public Safety Committee in place of Councilwoman Tina Vinton; the council held a roll call and the motion carried. The meeting record shows roll-call responses for mayor and council members recorded during votes.
No additional public action on the area plan occurred during the session; staff will continue outreach and return with next steps as scheduled.
