Commission appoints teen-center public-art RFQ panel, welcomes two new commissioners

The El Segundo Recreation and Parks Commission voted to appoint a selection panel to review RFQ responses for public art at the city's teen center and formally welcomed two newly appointed commissioners.
Cultural Arts Coordinator Em Gann outlined the RFQ process, which will solicit artists for exterior mural or three-dimensional work, narrow candidates in an initial RFQ phase and then invite three finalists to submit site-specific proposals during the RFP phase. "Right now, we're looking at the end of October, beginning of November to review the... our resumes, our portfolios," Em Gann said, describing a timeline for initial reviews and noting that finalist interviews and further meetings could extend beyond that period.
Commissioners emphasized teen participation. One commissioner said the most important outcome is that the art be attractive to kids and recommended a teen representative be on the panel; staff confirmed the teen advisory committee will reconstitute after summer and provide a representative. Em Gann said the panel work will be "very hands on" and that she is "open minded in terms of whether it's virtual or in person."
Amy Smith, one of the newly appointed commissioners (a landscape architect who said she has practiced for about 15 years), was nominated to serve on the panel. The commission approved the appointment by voice vote (recorded as 5-0).
The meeting also included brief introductions from two new commissioners. Jamin Griffiths, who said he has lived in El Segundo for 16 years and volunteered on the El Segundo Little League board for six to seven years, said he joined the commission to be part of "a new team." A second new commissioner (Amy Smith) said she lives on Main Street, has raised her daughter in El Segundo and looks forward to contributing landscape and design expertise.
The commission will forward the RFQ-panel recommendation to the Arts & Culture Committee (ACC) and staff will coordinate the timeline for panel meetings and finalist review. Em Gann said final recommendations will be returned to council by year end.
