Marlborough accepts donated roller from Arlington Paving; DPW to repair estimated damage

Public Works Director Matt Patnode briefed the Marlborough Board of Selectmen on April 15 about a used road roller Arlington Paving offered the town. Patnode said the company initially asked whether the town would buy the roller for $10,000, but after the machine struck a railroad overpass while being moved to auction and sustained damage, Arlington Paving offered to donate it.
Patnode told the board he had received a worst‑case repair estimate of about $5,000 and is confident the DPW can fix the damage; he said the donated unit is a newer machine with roughly half the hours of the town's current roller. Selectman Nelson moved to accept the donation, Chairman Paight seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. The DPW will retain its current roller until the donated machine is repaired and operational, at which point the older unit will be sold.
Patnode also reported the DPW has pipe fittings to repair the Terrace Street bridge railing and that the Library Trustees approved replacing the library detention pond with a dry well; the DPW and Will Coutts will install the dry well for about $1,200 to create a flat, safer grassy area.
