Commission reviews William Russell Allen House feasibility study; 'Friends' group forms to seek funding and repairs

The Pittsfield City Historical Commission reviewed a feasibility study for the William Russell Allen House at its March 9 meeting and discussed immediate repair needs and funding constraints.
Chair John Dickson told commissioners he circulated the feasibility study in advance and noted the existence of a prior 1979 study; Commissioner Pamela Sandstrom asked for a copy of the 1979 document. Dickson said a community group, "Friends of the William Russell Allen House," has formed as a non-city, non-commission organization to explore options for the property and to aid advocacy and fundraising.
City staffer Kevin Rayner said the commission is at a crossroads with the state on project funding but confirmed the city can request permission from the state to carry out some emergency repairs even if the city does not yet own the property. Commissioners discussed arranging a site visit once snow melts to inspect the exterior and determine needed work.
No formal vote or acquisition action was taken at the meeting. The commission scheduled a site visit and will continue discussion at upcoming meetings; the next regular meeting is set for March 23 at 5:15 p.m.
