Park Square local historic district petition advances to City Council after Ordinance committee approval

At the March 9 meeting the Pittsfield City Historical Commission heard a report from Kevin Rayner on a proposed Park Square Local Historic District map and the status of the study-committee petition.
Rayner told commissioners the petition was approved by the City’s Ordinance and Rules committee the previous week and that he plans to present the measure to City Council the following night. He said that if City Council approves the establishment of a study committee the district boundaries can be modified in the future and that the city will send letters to local boards asking them to participate; remaining seats on the study committee would be filled at-large.
The commission viewed a draft map of the proposed district. Rayner did not report any formal vote of the Historical Commission on the petition at this meeting; he presented the procedural status and next steps for the City Council process.
If City Council approves the petition, the next procedural steps described by staff include forming the study committee, circulating notices to affected property owners and boards, and convening the committee to study district boundaries and guidelines. The commission did not set any additional local deadlines during this meeting.
