Nebraska City Board approves 2025–26 budget and tax request

The Nebraska City Board of Education approved the 2025–26 Nebraska City Public Schools budget and the district’s 2025–26 tax request for Otoe County School District 111 at a special meeting on Sept. 22, 2025. The meeting was called to order at 6:11 p.m. and adjourned at 6:39 p.m.
Board President Lisa Chaney presided over the meeting; all motions on the agenda passed by recorded roll call votes with eight members voting in favor and one member, John Hodges, recorded as absent. Brent Shanholtz moved to approve the district budget for 2025–26, and Stacie Higgins seconded; that motion passed 8–0. Shanholtz also moved the tax request resolution for Otoe County School District 111, seconded by Jim Nemec; that motion passed 8–0.
The budget and tax request votes followed routine procedural business. Chaney publicly thanked district leadership after the tax request vote, saying the board appreciated “months of analysis, planning and preparation” from superintendent and business office staff. The minutes identify Superintendent Fritch and Business Manager Brenda Wieckhorst as staff the board singled out for thanks.
Superintendent Mark Fritch also delivered the superintendent’s report, alerting the board to the State Education Conference set for Nov. 19–21, the Dana Cole auditor visit scheduled for Oct. 29–30, and an Americanism and Civics work session planned for Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m. before the regular board meeting. He also updated the board on transportation and vehicles and noted the district’s transcript service, Parchment.
Other routine items handled during the meeting included approval of a requested absence for Board Member John Hodges and approval of minutes from the Sept. 8, 2025 budget hearing and regular meeting. No members of the public addressed the board during the public comment period.
