River Ridge board discusses storm‑surge risk, agrees to help coordinate resilience planning

Board members and staff discussed increasing storm surge impacts and a proposed resilience action plan for Pelican Sound during the Oct. 22 meeting. Eric Long, PSGRC general manager, said the community should take a proactive approach and described an analysis showing a 10‑ to 12‑foot storm surge could have flooded an estimated 45%–55% of the community in a modeled Hurricane Milton scenario.
Long asked the CDD to designate a board representative and staff or engineering representative to coordinate with potential partners, including the Army Corps of Engineers and neighboring West Bay, if funding becomes available. The board agreed Mr. Long and newly appointed Keith Merrill will assist with coordination and authorized District Engineer Charlie Krebs to help as necessary.
Long said a multi‑agency, multi‑year effort could take up to a decade and involve measures inside and outside the CDD boundary, and that 3‑foot storm panels would be inadequate for the risk described. The board expressed support for participating in planning and asked staff to help identify next steps and appropriate points of contact for potential funding and technical assistance.
