The City of Charles Town Board of Parks and Recreation on March 27 asked staff to pursue low‑cost ways to keep parks active while the municipal pool is closed for construction.
John (parks staff) told the board that Jorge has prepared a spring tennis schedule and that summer tennis will be similar to last year; John said the department would keep registration fees the same for this season. "He has put together a schedule for the spring program...Summer tennis program is pretty much the same as last year," John said. He said Alyssa will receive the schedule and staff will advertise the program on the county site and the city website.
The board discussed simple activation steps that would not burden maintenance staff. Chair Kyle proposed renting porta‑potties at the skate park and at Lynton Knowles so families can spend more time at the sites without added staff labor; John confirmed he had ordered one unit for the skate park. Commissioners suggested mobile recreation vans, food trucks, chalk‑art walls, and introductory skate or bike clinics that could be run by community partners or sponsors.
Board members also flagged outreach opportunities: distributing program information through schools, doing a ribbon cutting for skate park improvements once equipment arrives, and promoting family movie nights in the Depot District in partnership with the county. John said the department will advertise soon and aims to have the new parks/recreation hire on board by July 1 to support programming and point‑of‑sale setup for pool operations.
Next steps: staff will circulate the finalized tennis schedule when available and work with commissioners and community partners on proposals for mobile rec, pop‑up events and porta‑potty siting. The board did not take formal action; members asked staff to return with concrete proposals and costs.
