At the April 28 Airport Advisory Board meeting, staff reviewed a pilot survey and several capital-project priorities, including instrument-approach improvements, runway lighting options and a recently amended FDOT grant.
Jacob summarized a 19-response pilot survey in which respondents prioritized an LPV approach for Runway 7 to lower minimums and improve precision for instrument procedures. He described Runway 11 as lacking lighting and having obstruction constraints, which complicate adding an LPV there. Staff said the FAA response cycle is currently slower because of federal staffing and budget constraints, and that some items will require FAA work and possible funding partnerships.
On capital projects, staff reported the city commission approved a second amendment to accept an additional $1,250,000 from FDOT, bringing the grant total for the pavement/ad project to $2,500,000. Staff also described a 60% design for runway-guard ("wigwag") lights at runway hot spots to improve pilot awareness, noted the planned fuel farm work is close to starting construction and described next steps for obtaining FAA approvals for night approaches once the Taxiway Bravo/Runway 725 project is complete.
Why it matters: LPV approaches and lighting changes can reduce weather-related cancellations and improve safety for instrument operations; grant funding advances a multi-million-dollar pavement and improvement project.
What comes next: staff will contact FAA flight standards to pursue an LPV request for Runway 7, continue master planning and capacity studies, and provide the board with a timeline and funding details for runway-guard lights and other capital items.
